A rank called deputy superintendent (SOP) or assistant commissioner of police (ACP) in the commissionary system [11 was introduced in 1876 after the policy of indianisation was introduced. It was initially exclusive to Indians and was similar to the rank of assistant superintendent (a position previously held only in the hands of Europeans). Deputy superintendents are now state police officers who belong to the provincial police forces, either direct entrants at that grade or elevated from inspector. Assistant commissioners of Police, who are members of the provincial forces, may be promoted in the Indian Police Service after a period of time which varies from 8 to 15 years based according to the states. [2] Deputy superintendents are typically posted as circles officers in districts. Within the state of Rajasthan as well as Uttar Pradesh, the rank is usually referred to as a the circle officer (CO) however this is not technically correct since CO is a job and not a rank. Within the State of West Bengal, DSPs are the police officers who manage a sub-division. DSP is the person in charge of the subdivision and is commonly identified as an officer of the sub divisional police (SDPO).
The candidates must have Indian citizens of any level and be aged between 21-38 years old. There is the minimum physical requirement of 168 cm (5 6'6 inches) for men and 5 ft 155 cm (5 1 inch)) for women, chest requirements of 84 cm (33 in) and chest expansion by 5 cm (2 in). For Tamil Nadu, an average of 165 centimeters (5 ft 5 in) will be the limit of height needed. Each year, states' governments draw up a list of members of the state police service to be eligible for promotions to the Indian police Service. Officers recruited by states Public Service Commissions get this rank directly. The highest rank that is Superintendent of Police while the rank below is Inspector.
